The neighborhood is represented by a council person on the Los Angeles City Council.  The area also has the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council to monitor and advocate on behalf of the area.  The 21-person council, created in 2000, undertakes many projects to increase the quality of life for residents.  Projects have ranged from beautification to projects designed to bring area artists together for the benefit of the community.  Several area associations, such as the Silver Lake Reservoirs Conservancy, the Silver Lake Improvement Association and the Chamber of Commerce, also work to bring community members together for local improvement.
There are a number of private and public schools serving the area.  Families with school age children are able to select the school that will best meet the needs for their children.  A local public library provides additional educational opportunities.
